William L. Bargar, M.D. was born and raised in Youngstown,
hio. He obtained
a Bachelors Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from
Ohio State in 1968
and then went into the Navy for four
years. During this time he taught
nuclear physics and reactor design at the
U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School
in Bainbridge, Maryland, receiving his
Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of Delaware.
He then went back to Ohio State University
School of Medicine and received
his Medical Degree in 1975. He completed
a fellowship in Biomechanics and
Joint Replacement Surgery at UCLA in
1978 and completed his orthopaedic residency at CaseWestern in Cleveland
in 1981.
From 1981 to 1986 he was on the fulltime faculty as an Assistant
Professor
of Orthopaedic Surgery at U.C. Davis School of
Medicine. He
is American Board Certified.
In 1986 Dr. Bargar began private practice in Sacramento at
Sutter General
Hospital and Mercy Hospital, but he has continued his active research
at the U.C. Davis Research Labs as well as
the Sutter Institute for Medical
Research. He has developed a
new approach to cementless total hip replacement
using CT generated CAD/CAM custom prostheses. He is also the co-developer
of "Robodoc" a surgical robotic device for improving precision
in orthopaedic surgery. He has written numerous scientific articles and
book chapters on total hip and knee surgery. Dr. Bargar performs both
hip and knee reconstructive surgery as well as surgery for musculoskeletal
tumors of the lower extremities.
In his spare time he enjoys golf, tennis, skiing and spending time with
is wife, Carol, and two daughters, Brooke and Lesley.
