Total Hip Replacement Overview: Anesthesia

  Introduction

The decision for the type of anesthesia to be used in your surgery, like the decision to perform the surgery itself, is one of risks and benefits. This is a joint decision between you, your anesthesiologist, and your surgeon.

For hip and knee surgery a spinal anesthetic with sedation is usually preferred. This involves placing a single injection of medicine into your back. Once this injection is performed medication will be given though your IV to allow you to sleep through the surgery.

Occasionally for hip replacement surgery it may be necessary to use general anesthesia. General anesthesia requires placing an endotracheal tube, once you are asleep, to protect your airway while you are on your side.

The best anesthesia involves your anesthesiologist and your surgeon working with you to provide the safest pain free way to have surgery.
